The Leander Ship was the trophy that captured the imagination of the spectators in those great regattas of yesteryear. The Leander Rowing Club was based in London and they competed in an International Regatta in Cork at the turn of the century. At that regatta they defeated a crew from Berlin and so pleased were they with the hospitality shown them by the Cork people that they presented the trophy as a show of gratitude. Leander also promised to defend the trophy if any crew outside these islands competed for it.
