Mahon Golf Course
The beautiful Mahon Golf Course with its fairways stretching along the Douglas estuary is overlooking Lough Mahon. The Stokers,a protestant family, farmed the land up until 1921. The Morrissey family then took up residence and the sand and gravel pit on the estate were to play an important role in the construction of the houses at Capwell. The sand and gravel from Clover Hill was also used for Christ the King Church in Turner's Cross and the Savoy Cinema in Patrick's Street, which now is not in use any more. Clover Hill was purchased by Cork Corporation in the early seventies and was turned into Mahon Golf Course. It is the only Municipal Golf Course in Ireland. The Clover House was then converted into a restaurant, Lounge Bar and Function Rooms for all occasions. |
