Cork Constitution Rugby Club (Cork Con.)

Cork Constitution Rugby Grounds are situated on Temple Hill which is 600m from our school. Every week, various classes from the school go up to "Con." for their P.E. lesson. The school's Sports Day is also held in Con.

Cork Con., I'm sure you'll agree, has an interesting story to tell.

In the 1890s 'The Cork Constitution' was a well read newspaper in Cork city. It was a newspaper that was not published on Sundays, which allowed the staff to be free on Saturday afternoons. To fill this 'free time', the staff decided to form a cricket club. Cricket however is a summer sport and once the cricket season was over, thoughts turned to a winter activity and the staff decided to turn to rugby football. The rugby club came into existence in 1892. Cork Constitution's pitch was at this time on The Mardyke where the cricket club is now situated.
Mr David Kelly Kilroy was the first President of the club.
On April 2nd 1896, Constitution contested their first cup final and won it by two tries to nil.
Con. moved from the Mardyke to Temple Hill in 1953. The grounds have expanded since to 12 acres. At present, there are three playing pitches on the site.

The players' facilities include 7 dressing rooms, showers and gym. For socialising there is the main bar, dance hall and President's room.On February 1st 2002 Constitution took a major step forward with the switching on of the new floodlights in Temple Hill.

Many players from Con. have gone on to represent Ireland in rugby. Present Con. Internationals include Ronan 0' Gara, John Kelly and Peter Stringer.
Many of the children attending Crab Lane play underage rugby with Con. and,who knows, some might wear the green of Ireland in the not too distant future.
(The generosity of the club in allowing the children use the facility for our P.E. activity is very much appreciated by everybody associated with Ballintemple N.S.)
